Insights from Michael P. Affuso, Esq., incoming President and CEO of the New Jersey Bankers Association (“NJ Bankers”)

The New Jersey Bankers Association has named Michael P. Affuso, Esq., to replace the retiring John E. McWeeney, Jr., as President and CEO. Mr. Affuso will officially assume the role on July 1, 2022. Mr. Affuso joined the NJBA in 2008 and most recently served as EVP/Director of Government Relations. On this podcast, we discuss the ever-changing state of the banking industry including bank regulation and legislative hurdles in 2022. We discuss the importance of banking associations to promote the profitability and strength of the banking industry including access to expert and peer thought leadership, education and training, networking, and a platform for advocacy. Michael P. Affuso, Esq.

New Jersey Bankers Association

As of July 1, 2022, Michael P. Affuso is the President and CEO of the New Jersey Bankers Association. Prior to becoming President and CEO, he served the New Jersey Bankers Association as executive vice president and director of Government Relations. In that role, Mr. Affuso provided legal opinions and analysis of proposed and pending legislation that affected the New Jersey banking industry. He also managed relationships with both federal and state legislatures for the NJBankers. Mr. Affuso also serves as an adjunct professor at Monmouth University.

Before joining NJBankers, Mr. Affuso served as deputy district director and General Counsel for Congressman Albio Sires. He provided legal opinion and created strategies for legislation before and to be introduced to the Financial Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee. Mr. Affuso also developed an annual budget and managed expenditures for State District Offices; managed a staff of eleven employees and four offices; coordinated constituent relations and press efforts; and managed Federal Grant applications. Prior to his role as district director and General Counsel, Mr. Affuso was the campaign manager for Albio Sires for Congress.

Prior to his government service, he served in various positions at Mellon Bank, Morgan Stanley, Metropolitan Life Insurance/Banker’s Trust and at Merrill Lynch.

Mr. Affuso graduated from American University with a B.A. in political science and minor in history. He received his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. He is admitted to practice in New Jersey/Federal District Court and New York/Federal District Court.
